Lordy not a post on evolution
So, I just finished this self-helpy book on perfectionism. It was a little facile, but it had a few useful insights for me. But that’s not what I want to talk about. The author littered the text with references to god, and the whole last chapter was a call to get right with god. I noticed after finishing it that the publisher is a religious imprint.
That didn’t bother me so much, but his tangential bit on intelligent design really stuck in my craw. He said that he couldn’t witness the miracle of birth without believing that an amazing god had designed this universe. I find this kind of amazing because my gut reaction is just 180′ opposite. I look at the ridiculous complexity, diversity, and rube goldberg side of biology and I just can’t believe anything but evolution shaped our world. If you had the chance to design our world – and humans – is this really what you’d come up with? Surely a miraculous designer could streamline that baby chute a bit more.
