2008 bankruptcies
Rob Salomon has a list of top bankruptcies in 2008. Here’s a graph of number by a few industry categories from Rob’s data.
Rob predicts the raw number of bankruptcies will rise sharply in 2009. How about the mix of industries? Will retail and real estate run the board again, or will consumer products and business service failures tick up more quickly?
Update: The WSJ says 2009 will be much, much worse for retailers. S&P rates nine chains with significant chance of default on debt. Financial institutions – ahead of the curve as always (not) – are reducing their exposure to the retail sector. Looks like the end of the U.S. consumption boom will disproportionately punish retailers. Other consumer-focused sectors like restaurants, airlines, and media will probably rise as well.
